Welcome to the 3rd edition of education hackathon. To get going here is a proposal for the starter question of your local gathering.

Education Hackathon São Paulo – A path into innovative democratic solutions

It was definitely a day to remember. In order to make a more proactive event we decided to focus on the cocreation sections, being the whole event itself a cocreation experience.

 

The challenge

After the first Education Hackathon a thought was always present in our minds: There are so many powerful, positive, groundbreaking education projects, with a holistic purpose, searching for involving all stakeholders in the education process. So, instead of reproducing similar ideas, how can we help those projects to emerge?

Bearing this question in mind, we connected with some education projects. In the end, 3 of those projects opened their challenges to us and participated as the proponents of the cocreation marathon.

The three projects were:

Polifonia Escola Livre – Is a free school oriented to collaborative creation and social transformation. Polifonia came to life out of following a experimentation path, which seeks to connect with and host diverse education initiatives, cultural initiatives, collective initiatives, NGOs, institutions, business and governments which try to foster a deep dialogue about learning through experiencing and direct intervention on the real world. They also host many courses which are action/project oriented in order to become a hub for social impactful initiatives.

Edukatu – The first learning web for conscious consumption and sustainability. Edukatu gathers in the same environment teacher and primary students of the whole country, in addition to people who are interested on it, to share ideas, information and practices about the theme. Therefore, Edukatu wants to contribute to introduce the conscious consumption approach and related themes in the schools plans.

Aporé – Aporé searches for new ways of teaching, learning and experiencing together with schools and universities starting from real observed needs which are deeply interpreted. Through innovation and workshops, Aporé assist people to find their life purpose, talents and dreams and put them into practice. It also offer a collaborative working approach through a supporters and partners network.

 

The Day

Our friends from Polifonia Escola Livre lended let the Education Hackathon use their space, so our event took place at Polifonia Office, a beautiful house full of co-working spaces, blackboard walls and a big fishbowl room surrounded by a beautiful garden. We invited students, educators, interested people, activists and entrepreneurs to the space.

Our day begun one hour later than it was supposed to start, due to the world cup events, the city traffic was really intense. Before the activities started we invited people to build up the event with us, we suggested a schedule but we made clear that it could be changed anytime if people feel it, so the event success was not only the host’s responsibility but everyone’s.

First, we had a presentation section, where Polifonia, Edukatu and Aporé presented themselves, exposed their challenges and how they can engage with possible volunteers. During this stage we had a wonderful surprise, the school Oficina Pindorama, which is in transition stage from a traditional pedagogy to a democratic one, showed up, presented their transformations and challenges. But that was not a common presentation, the kids, the students, took over and they presented themselves their experience on this transition stage and how the new approach was being so positive in their lives and learning process… the school was not boring anymore!!picture 2

 

After this good surprise we proceeded to the next stage, the cocreation section. People divided themselves in 3 circles, corresponding to the 3 projects. Some stayed in the same circle during the whole time and some were the bees, the pollinators, jumping from one group to another and spreading ideas.

The following step was thinking on how to proceed with the cocreated ideas after the event. We then proceeded to a collective dinner, where people had more opportunities to connect.

Later on we continued to the presentation time, where people presented the developed creations and solutions for each project. Polifonia discussed on how they could turn their place into a collective space to foster gatherings involving a living community; Edukatu developed strategies to better communicate and mobilize more schools around the country and how approach students, teachers, parents and community in order to introduce conscious consumption discussion; and Aporé, came up with an innovative solution, using pollinators that could be innovation leaders in different parts of the world by connecting with different networks, e.g. Education Hackathon network.

Next Steps

During the day we still worked on how we can continue what has been created during the event and how people, who want to engage with the next steps, could keep developing the ideas and implementing them together with the proponents..

On the following days we send forms asking for the event feedback and participants availability and will to remain working on the projects. The post-event work was brought in order to keep energy level up. We are trying to create a continuation and not just a one-day event.

Luckily, many participants engaged on the after steps! The groups have already created a meeting opportunity to keep improving what has been developed during the hackathon day.

We were lucky to have such a nice group around us with so many talents! We are more than thankful for having this opportunity and looking forward for the next edition…

Education hackathon in Brno – Eduhack14#2, June 2014

We did it!

The first Czech edition has been organised by the performing artist Giulia Buvoli (Italy) and Veronika Klimesova from Lead a Change, and Lea Mentlikova from eduforum.cz and  gamifikatori.cz. The workshop took place at Y Soft corporation, a.s., our sponsor partner.

Happiness – and the educational system

We’ve invited students, activists and figures from the Czech educational scene and organised our program several blocks. We’ve opened the event with Giulia’s art performance “Random”, which questioned our own feeling of happiness and what ‘being happy’ means to us. We draw, acted and wrote. After that we all gathered for brainstorming sessions during which we discussed the reality of the educational system today and the ideal state we imagine.

Theater of the Oppressed

After the brainstorming, Giulia introduced “Theater of the Oppressed”, which through games allows to simulate any possible social situation to better understand its dynamics. In the first game, we were asked to form a group which coordinates its actions against one oppressor. It was interesting to watch the (long-ish) process of creating an effective group strategy – sharing or collaboration clearly were not our strongest skills. The second game focused on a our perception of social hierarchy. These games also demonstrated how ‘learning by doing’ can speed up the learning process.

Finding common ground

At the end everyone has written down one thing which she / he is going to do to make the world a better place – from starting a constructive debate about education to smiling at people, it seemed we all have similar goals.

We’ve closed the workshop by the discussion about where we could take Edu Hackathon next – we have started brainstorming and preparing for the new Edu Hackathon straight away and we look forward to see you all in September 2014!

24H EDUCATION HACKATHON………??? WTF??? WHAT IS THAT?

How many times have we heard that question? In many places around the world. 1 month ago nobody had a clear picture what it would be. But on March 14th/15th and 16th 12 brave local communities took on the adventure to find it out – together. In 12 countries on 4 continents – connected via Facebook, Twitter Google and Skype.

All with the same vision: Getting in shape for the 21st century and transforming our education systems. Hacking existing systems. Meaning finding disruptive solutions for a systemic change in a world that has changed tremendiously. For 24 hours 12 learning communities bonded within their region with local networks and shared their results and experience globally. The results were breath taking. Here are some stories.

WHAT HAS HAPPENED ON THE WEEKEND OF MARCH 14TH/15TH/16TH? SOME EXAMPLES FROM THE LOCAL HACKS.


We started on March 14th in Cairo…. Ok. Until this weekend I had not been aware that in Egypt the weekend is on Friday-Saturday and Sunday is the beginning of the week. So we had an early start in Egypt which was even opening more doors for the global community. And the start was really promising.

The Egyptian team jumped into the 24h Education Hackathon without any sense of fear. You could tell that chaotic settings and self-organizing processes are well-known to many parts of this planet. The next generation of leaders will very likely learn in those evnironments how to move out of our western dilemma. And the results of Cairo are impressive. During the hackathon a team was formed that carries on the mission to open a new school.🙂

Education Hackathon Gent/Belgium – An inspiring day with inspiring people

So here I come to share a little bit of what happened in the Gent edition. It was a very nice experience.

The challenge

First of all, it was really challenging organizing an event in a few days and in a place I have never been before. The network I previously had in Gent was basically the same network the organization who is hosting me had. I found some barriers with being fully taken seriously for being a brazilian guy in Belgium trying to organize a local event for alternative education (can you imagine how confusing it was to people?? haha). I contacted many local organizations and people I previously knew, printed flyer, went to schools and universities to announce the event and etc. Luckily, I have by my side Fabula Collective (fabulacollective.org), and amazing organization in Gent run by 4 formidable girls.

I received many “maybes” for the day and we ended up being a group of five participants in the hackathon day. However, surprisingly, it didn’t make our day less exciting! Among our participants we had two amazing women, the manager and principal of a sudbury school in Gent and an independent journalist who writes about education (mainly new forms of education). We shared lots of knowledge, networks and information.

The need to change

Coincidently, all the participants had something very special in common, the feeling that the current mainstream education system is broken and doesn’t fulfill kids, teenagers and adults needs. We also understand that the current education system bring some negative effects that sometimes strongly influence individuals’ life.

Starting from zero – For a non-standardized education we should start with no structures

As we want to build something new we couldn’t afford having set structures, therefore, after some previous brainstorming on how we should run the day, we decided that the hackathon structure would be decided during the process and by all the people who would be present during the event – so we did. The day started with personal presentations which were linked with some intense conversations. We started at 1.11 pm and finished just at past 22pm! In any moment we tried to come up with an output or project that should be done.

The magic of letting it be

But the world and people, when connected, work in a magic way. Our free structure and provided space to people communicate, understand and share, brought a concrete output. Later (around 8 pm), during our conversations – which were not necessarily World Cafés or any famous methodology, it was just human beings communicating in a good and old circle – we started discussing if there is such a necessity of coming with big projects on how education should be, or should be transformed… after all, who are we to say what is better or worse for people? But at the same time we started realizing that the topic education itself is not widely discussed because the mainstream education and the system itself block us and our thoughts to talk about it. Although we have this beautiful community of passionate activist people trying to change education, the masses don’t discuss or talk about it. Maybe many people would find themselves connected to the theme and have many new ideas on how to proceed, but the conversation was never introduced to them. Also, we understand that everyone should be in the discussion, which means, that taking into place orthodox views is extremely important to contribute to a diverse conversation. Saying that we came up with our output: a free space (in bar, café or park) where everybody (literally, whoever feels like) could come and join to talk about education. The goal is very simple, sending an invitation and giving people the chance to start talking about education… When everybody is consciously talking about the topic, real changes can emerge. As we are dreamers and love fairy tales and fun stuff we decided to call it, for now, Alice in Eduland… hahaha. Honestly, if you see such a name you would also be interested to check, what it is, right?? We also started discussing places to host, facilitators, networks that we activate to make it happen!

Education hackathon in São Paulo – Eduhack14#1, March 2014

Thank you all!

First of all I would like to thank  everyone, who was close to me during the process, helping, sharing ideas and contacts. The collective construction was the most important thing.

The event happened in the IMPACT HUB, one of our partners, and we hosted almost 50 participants.

Breaking the paradigms,  reflecting school memories

The day started breaking paradigms. People where asked to make a chronology line of themselves without speaking a word. Now imagine a lot of peoplem, which are trying to talk only with mimics. It was just amazing! After that first stage the participants were divided in three groups and were asked to introduce themselves, and to tell the happier history they remembered about their education. The involvement of people was really nice!

Inspiration – fun – co-creation

The event was based in three pillars: 1. Inspiration, 2. Fun and 3. Co-creation The first pillar means to inspire the participants. And this happened with some people that were specially invited to join the event and to share their history and motivations. These people are: André Gravatá, Daniel Iane, Antonio Lovato, Ely Pachoaclik, and Caio Dib.

Caio Dib told about his project enabling people to see saw the many different methodologies of education. Ely talked about the “Manifesto of Education” in a really playful way. And after that André, Daniel and Antonio talked about their movement of enthusiasm.

World Café

To discuss about methodologies of education we did a “world café” , which was really interesting. This round was based in these main questions:

1) How to leverage the potential of each initiative so that they live together in harmony and in active networking?

2) How do you see this happening in your reality?

After that everybody ate a collective lunch together and were invited to do a walk through downtown.

1)  People exit the street and ask people how they see the appropriation of public spaces to use then as a learning environment learn environmental

2)  People share their experience on the street

3)  People were divided in groups to present their experience in the streets in a artistic way

Harvesting – cloud, sun, rainbow and star

To conclude the event everybody should write on a sheet with these three shapes:

Cloud – what was not good (got a little cloudy)

Sun – what was good / great – (what shine)

Rainbow – what you learned (the pot of gold that you found)

Star – the suggestions you want to give to upcoming events

To conclude the day: Everybody danced!
